SOPHIE SMITH - WHEN WE CAME TO DURBAN
My mother came to Durban in 1988 with a baby and a husband who was gradually losing his mind. When he finally had a psychotic break, he would refer to the experience as going up behind the clouds.
I grew up hearing stories about what a shock it all was to her system - shrieking hadedas that reminded her of prehistoric pterodactyls, the monkey that clambered right over me on the kitchen counter to steal bananas out of the fruit bowl, and the giant cockroaches.
There is a glaring lack of reference to the violence and political turmoil happening in the country at the time, something I never ever heard my mother discuss.
