CAROLINE SOHIE, THERE BEYOND THE TREES
When my family first moved to this place, the garden still bore the remnants of an old orchard. In the spring, white apple and plum blossoms fell like snow, and summer was a time of ritual, marked by the sweet scent of fruit ripening and the thick aroma of jams simmering in the kitchen.
As the years passed, the fruit trees gradually gave way to planters filled with flowers, and the forest behind our home grew taller and denser, nourished by the Christmas trees we planted each year. This became my enchanted forest—a sanctuary where I built a secret deck high in the trees, pieced together from recycled timber. It was here that I would escape, losing myself in the pages of a book, hidden from the world below. With my best friend, we would drape large, colorful curtains between the trees and transform the space into an improvised theatre, performing for an audience that existed only in our imaginations. This place became a refuge, a landscape where I navigated the dreams and pains of adolescence.
Each time I smell the familiar scent of my parents' garden, or feel the earth beneath my feet, I am reminded of my rite of passage, the precious fleeting of time.
