My work is rooted in the past and in the present, intertwining threads of baroque and African history with contemporary themes. It consists of a variety of digital and physical collages that examine issues such as racism, family relationships, gender, sexuality, violence and identity. My artistic journey on the other hand is a tapestry woven from the threads of history, symbolism and imagination.
As a collage artist, I find my muse in the rich tapestry of archival imagery and the intricate language of baroque symbolism. My hand-crafted collages marry a multitude of archival imagery and materials to create visual dialogues exploring the past and present tense of black people, the African diaspora and historical archives.
The use of black and white archival imagery as well as baroque symbolism, gives each individual piece a heightened perception of texture and light which empowers my art. Through my work, I strive to breathe new life into forgotten narratives and create a visual symphony that resonates with the depths of human experience. In the world of archival imagery, I discover a treasure trove of stories waiting to be retold. Old photographs become the building blocks of my art.
I carefully select and juxtapose these fragments, rearranging them to create new narratives that transcend time and place. In doing so, I celebrate the beauty of the past while inviting viewers to reconsider its relevance in our modern world.
Similarly, baroque symbolism is my chosen language, which is a complex and layered system of meaning that infuses my work with depth and intrigue. The symbolism of light and shadow, the interplay of life and death and the eternal dance of the sacred and profane all find their place in my collages. Each piece is a puzzle of symbols, inviting viewers to decode its hidden meanings and embark on a visual journey of discovery. My artistic process is a blend of meticulous planning and spontaneous intuition.
I meticulously source and curate my archival materials, seeking the perfect balance between the familiar and the enigmatic. Then, in the act of collage, I allow my subconscious to guide me, trusting in the serendipity of each cut and paste. It is in these moments of creative surrender that I find the true essence of my art.
Through my work, I hope to inspire contemplation and curiosity, encouraging viewers to explore the intersections of history, symbolism and personal interpretation. My collages are windows into the past and mirrors of the present, inviting you to reflect on the timeless themes that connect us all. It is through my art that I strive to bring a greater understanding of the power and beauty of archival materials, in order to challenge and engage with social issues.
