FAVOURITE IMAGES
FARREN VAN WYK
My mother has had this rug of the Big Five for about 20 years, I've always wanted to do something with it but I had no idea what I could use it for. I then saw an image of Huey P. Newton sitting on a chair similar to one I’d received from an ex-colleague. He had this pose and was a spear and rifle. I realised this is the energy I wanted to embody. We can become these characters we want to be. The last element came from an image of Nelson Mandela walking around in a New York Yankees jacket during his first visit to America. I included the Xhosa and the knobkerrie as a reference back to him. It was putting all these different artefacts together.
THERO MAKEPE
My favourite photograph is Re A Hlopela (Tombstone Unveiling). One part was taken at a tombstone unveiling before I was born in 1992, and the other part photographed in 2019. I was inspired by a scene in an anime called Ghost In A Shell where the character dives into this body of water and sees a reflection of themself. I wanted to do an underwater photograph for the fun of it. It was only later that I noticed how the blue of the family photograph matched the blue of the water and decided to put them together.
I arrived at wanting to be an artist out of pure enjoyment. I look at art as piecing a puzzle, ‘how do I put this puzzle together?’ There’s a sense of enjoyment I get out of experimentation.

This image is probably my most personal photograph. It speaks to why I love Kariba, it hits on the emotional chords. When I look at that photograph, I’m right there, I feel the warm breeze of the Zambezi and I’m going home as the man drives the boat. I made that image to remind me of Kariba, every time I see I’m transported there.
KALENGA NKONGE
This image was photographed at Lusaka City Market. We have these guys who move around in wheelbarrows carrying things, this man was wearing a Lebron James basketball jersey. There’s something about the colours and the movement around him. I feel like the images captures the spirit of Lusaka City Market.
